As sunglasses began to emerge as a fashion trend in the early 1980's, Italian eyewear producers DeRigo decided to enter the market, and in 1983 they introduced the Police sunglasses brand into the current market. Soon to become a popular apparel and accessories house it is often forgotten that the Police brand came about from a passion for simple sunglasses designs.
When the line was developed, the Italian fashion house felt that the styles of sunglasses worn by the Police were quite fashionable and they adopted a lot of the ideas from the designs to their own brand, hence why they labelled it "Police". The brand wasn't just to be another high-end fashion label, it was to cater to a wider and more practical audience. The glasses were designed to be robust and sturdy enough to be worn every day without concerns over breakage or damage.
Attracting a more sporty and casual persona, the police brand is more of a casual approach to high-end fashion and contrasts the very bold and often over-the-top approaches of modern fashion houses.
